NORML notes that Cuomo championed marijuana legalization in 2020
Gov. Andrew Cuomo is one of nine U.S. governors to earn an “A” rating from the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, one of the nation’s leading supporters of legal weed.
That’s despite Cuomo’s failure last year to win support for his plan to legalize adult recreational marijuana use in New York. NORML may have taken that into account by giving Cuomo an “A-” rating.
Cuomo this year is once again pushing for legal adult-use of marijuana, but may face many of the same obstacles that led to the state Legislature’s failure to agree on a bill in 2019.
NORML gave Cuomo credit for signing a marijuana “decriminalization” law late last year. That law expanded the amount of weed you can possess without facing a criminal charge, lowered the fines for simple possession and set up a process for those convicted of low-level marijuana crimes in the past to have their records expunged.
