Nebraska Will Vote On Legalizing Medical Marijuana In November

Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana submitted petitions with about 114,000 signatures

Voters in Nebraska will decide whether to legalize medical marijuana in the November election, state officials announced last week. Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen, who oversees the state’s elections, said on Friday that two separate medical marijuana initiatives would appear on ballots for the general election, according to a report from the Associated Press.

Earlier this year, the group Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana announced that it had submitted petitions with about 114,000 signatures of voters who support legalizing medical pot, far more than the 86,000 signatures needed to qualify the legalization measures for the general election ballot. In his announcement last week, Evnen said that his office had so far verified about 89,000 signatures for each ballot measure and that both had fulfilled a state requirement of obtaining signatures from at least 5% of registered voters in a minimum of 38 of Nebraska’s 93 counties.

“After years of hard work, we are beyond excited that Nebraskans will finally have the opportunity to have their voices heard on this issue in November,” said Crista Eggers, Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana’s campaign manager. “Our fight has been long, it has been hard, but we have never given up. Today we celebrate that very soon, patients in this state will have access to medical cannabis treatment.”
