Harvest Ball 2022 Honors Community Leaders With Awards For Legacy & Social Justice, Adds Redwood Roots And Rebel Grown As Sponsors For Emerald Cup Craft Cannabis Marketplace

The winners are in as The Emerald Cup sets to open its doors this weekend

  • Emerald Cup Awards season starts early at Harvest Ball ‘22 for three highly revered members of the California cannabis community
  • Harvest Ball announces Emerald Cup Craft Cannabis Marketplace sponsors
  • Harvest Ball ‘22 Weekend, and Single Day Passes are on sale now at www.theemeraldcup.com

In 2021, the Emerald Cup (www.theemeraldcup.com) expanded its format, transforming its annual competition and awards show away from its iconic annual December event to allow cultivators and craftspeople more time to prepare and submit their entries. This led to the creation of the Emerald Cup Harvest Ball, which marked the start of the journey for the Emerald Cup Competition. While the world’s largest and most diverse cannabis competition unfolds, the Emerald Cup will once again use the Harvest Ball festivities to announce the honorees of two very special awards – the 2022 Emerald Cup Legacy Award and the 2022 Emerald Cup Social Justice Award.

The 2022 Emerald Cup Legacy Award goes to:

TERRANCE ALAN

Terrance Alan’s career in cannabis began in 1979 when he met a Vietnam veteran turned cannabis grower in Whitethorn, Humboldt County, on the beach of a then-rural Cabo San Lucas. That chance meeting led Terrance to convert from personal grower to a community grower as he learned the way to survive growing in the woods. When indoor lights began to popularize, he moved his operations indoors, growing in a converted warehouse he turned into a garden.

Highlights of Terrance Alan’s career:

  • In 1999, Terrance led the San Francisco Late Night Coalition and began advocating for a new system of regulation for San Francisco’s entertainment industry. In 2002, he helped create the San Francisco Entertainment Commission and became its first Chair and then immediately partnered to start the LoveEvolution Parade and Festival.
  • In 2014, Terrance joined with Matt Kumin to found California Cannabis Voice, a statewide Political Action Committee (PAC) with Chapters they formed throughout California and in 2016, they helped organize the passage of Humboldt County’s Medical Marijuana Land Use Ordinance led by the Humboldt Cannabis Growers Network.
  • Also in 2016, he spent 3 years as the Chair of the San Francisco State Cannabis Legalization Task Force which advised San Francisco on the implementation of Prop 64. As Task Force Chair, he helped write the report that formed the basis of San Francisco’s permitting of legal cannabis.
  • Terrance, with Humboldt grower partner Nate Whittington, currently owns Flore Dispensary, which is known for its carefully curated cannabis offerings in the Castro of San Francisco.

The 2022 Emerald Cup Social Justice Award goes to:

AMY RALSTON
(co-recipient)

For over 20 years, Amy Ralston Povah has been an accomplished filmmaker, writer, speaker, and activist.  Her efforts have focused primarily on issues related to executive clemency, criminal justice reform, conspiracy laws, women in prison, and the drug war.

Highlights of Amy Ralston Povah’s career:

  • Amy served 9 years of a 24-year sentence after being convicted for “conspiracy” in an MDMA (Ecstasy) case. Oscar nominated journalist David France researched and featured Amy’s case in Glamour Magazine, which led to more media exposure on Court TV and other news outlets that ignited public outcry for a sentence commutation, which President Clinton granted on July 7, 2000.
  • Post-incarceration, Amy launched the CAN-DO Foundation, which obtained its 501(c)(3) status in 2004. CAN-DO advocates “justice through clemency” for victims of conspiracy and draconian sentencing laws. She has performed over 15 vigils in front of the White House from 2012 – 2022 and was invited to the White House by both the Obama and Trump administrations on eight occasions due to her work in criminal justice reform.
  • In 2013, Amy produced the award-winning film 420-The Documentary which has been voted in the Top 10 Best Pot Docs by numerous critics. 420- The Documentary covers the history of cannabis and featured numerous people serving life for cannabis, all of whom are now free in part due to Amy’s advocacy efforts during both the Obama and Trump administrations. She has also been featured in numerous documentaries, including Incarcerating US.

The 2022 Emerald Cup Social Justice Award goes to:

STEPHANIE LANDA
(co-recipient)

Stephanie Landa has been active in helping cannabis prisoners ever since her own incarceration over two decades ago. It was her first hand experience seeing the many problems long term inmates and their families face that fueled her desire to create change in the prison system.

Highlights of Stephanie Landa’s career:

  • Registered Freedom Grow as a 501C3 as a way to legally and efficiently send money to prisoners incarcerated for cannabis-related crimes
  • Slogan: “Bringing light to a dark cell”

Terrance Alan, Amy Ralston Povah, and Stephanie Landa continue to make our cannabis community, and the world around us, a better place. For that, and for their long-standing commitment to positive change, the Emerald Cup is honored to recognize them at Harvest Ball 2022.

Past award winners include:

  • Frenchie Cannoli (2021 Emerald Cup Legacy Award)
