Cannabis Product Labels In Washington Could Be Required To Include Information On Harvest Dates

Figuring out the age of a product using “best by,” “use by” or “sell by” dates can be confusing, but at least they give consumers some kind of idea. With cannabis, however, consumers are often left in the dark entirely, though that may soon change.
Regulators at the Washington state Liquor and Cannabis Board, or LCB, are considering updating label requirements for cannabis packaging.
The state mandates that certain information must be displayed on all cannabis products sold in licensed dispensaries, though date of harvest and date of processing are considered optional information.
On Sept. 24, LCB issued a preproposal statement of inquiry into the issue of requiring harvest and processing dates on cannabis packaging. This action from the LCB begins the process of exploring rule changes, allowing regulators to formally consider the issue and opening a public comment period.
The board is taking this action in response to a petition issued by Chuck Olivier, a self-described concerned citizen from Seattle.
Olivier stated in his petition to LCB that “Washington cannabis consumers do not have enough information to determine the quality of the product they are buying.”
