Orlando Delays Vote On Marijuana Dispensary Ban

Will Buddy Dyer and his staff put a stop to medical marijuana in Orlando?

A vote on whether to prohibit new medical marijuana dispensaries in Orlando was delayed Monday, as Mayor Buddy Dyer’s staff said more time was needed to study new state rules that limit cities’ ability to regulate legal-pot sellers.

The City Council had been set to vote Monday on an ordinance prohibiting new dispensaries in Orlando. Currently, Orlando has only one: Knox Cannabis Dispensary, which opened June 2 on North Orange Avenue in Ivanhoe Village. A second shop is planned by Trulieve on North Orange Blossom Trail. Both would be grandfathered if the ban is approved.

Orlando previously established rules limiting the number of dispensaries and creating distance requirements from schools, homes and other dispensaries. However, the Legislature later passed a law giving local governments the authority to ban medical marijuana retail outlets but forbidding them from being regulated more harshly than pharmacies.

The City Council will revisit the issue later this month, Dyer said.

Winter Garden and Winter Park are also considering bans.
