Cannabis Is Now The Biggest Attraction At The California State Fair

This year’s fair runs from July 17 to Aug. 2 in Sacramento

Dennis Forel has spent more than a decade riding a penny-farthing around the California State Fair. It’s given him a singular perspective on how the event has changed over time, as new exhibitions dot the grounds. The cannabis exhibition, he says, has never been better.

“Three years ago you went off to a very far-off part of the fairgrounds and you were not a part of the fair, you were just over there smoking your marijuana,” Forel said as he stood in the Sacramento heat last weekend. “Now you are part of the fair.”

The fair’s California Cannabis experience has grown from being tucked away to the side to now being the “largest individual exhibit” at the fair, according to James Leitz, founder of FairPlay Ventures and producer of the cannabis experience. Guests enter through a castlelike gate and are then guided past living cannabis plants before descending stairs to the main exhibit area, where a massive tent holds multiple dispensary pop-ups and farm stands. Guests can examine different cannabis products, talk to farmers, purchase products like prerolled joints, and then smoke in a grassy area with seating. Nearby is a taco truck for when guests get snacky, and a live music stage provides entertainment.
