Rapid Growth For Georgia Medical Cannabis Industry Since Reform
Georgia’s medical cannabis program now tops 40,000 patients
Georgia’s medical cannabis program has crossed 40,000 registered patients in the few weeks since new rules took effect July 1, an increase of nearly 10%.
The surge is one of the strongest periods of growth seen in Georgia medical marijuana since a low-THC program launched in 2023, according to 11Alive. Now that THC caps have been lifted and flower and vapes are available, the new patient interest means more tangible business opportunities in the limited-license state.
Under SB 220, which Gov. Brian Kemp signed into law in May:
- Cannabis patients can now possess up to 12 grams of THC, with no THC percentage cap on products
- Vaporizable products, including flower, will be allowed for patients 21 and over
- More medical conditions will qualify a patient for enrollment, including lupus
Supporters said the new eligibility rules and products on offer would encourage patients to participate in what had been a low participation program. And so far, that prediction has come true.
